A quick guide to the massive V2.0.3 upgrade—and why it feels like a brand new speaker.
If you own a TRIBIT StormBox Lava, you know it’s already a beast of a speaker. But at TRIBIT, we’re obsessed with sound. We’ve been reading your reviews and analyzing the data, and honestly? We knew we could squeeze even more performance out of this hardware.
So, instead of releasing a "Lava 2.0" and asking you to buy a new device, we’re giving you a major sound overhaul for free.
Depending on when you bought your speaker, you might be hearing a totally different sound than what we intended. We made a huge leap forward back in October 2025 with Firmware V2.0.0, and we want to make sure everyone is on the same page.
First, let’s do a quick version check:
- The "Old" Style (V1.5.5): If you bought your speaker between March 2024 and October 2025 and haven't updated it, you are here. This article is for you.

The "New" Standard (V2.0.0 & V2.0.3): If you updated after October 2025, or if you are on the latest V2.0.3 (Jan 2026), congrats! You already have the best sound.
(V2.0.3 just fixed some small bugs from V2.0.0, so the sound is identical).
If you are still sitting on V1.5.5, here is exactly why you need to hit that "Update" button right now.
1. A Cleaner, More Natural Tone (Timbre Optimization)
Let's start with the quality of the sound itself. We wanted to make sure that what you hear is exactly what the artist intended, especially at medium listening volumes where we spend most of our time.
(Note: The chart shows the measurements, but the real-world difference is what counts!)
Take a look at the chart above:
- The Red Line (Old): It was a bit bumpy. In the past, this meant some frequencies stood out too much while others got lost, making vocals or instruments sound a bit "colored."
- The Yellow Line (New): This is the new standard. We smoothed out the frequency response.
What does this mean for your ears?
It means higher fidelity. Vocals sound clearer and more natural, without being harsh. The instruments are better separated. It’s simply a more mature, refined sound profile that works great across all genres.
2. We Took the Leash Off (More Power & Dynamics)
This is the biggest change, and it’s where the "fun factor" comes in.
In the old version (V1.5.5), the speaker’s "Power Protector" (the limiter) was a bit too aggressive. To keep things safe, it would squash the sound whenever a strong beat hit. This reduced the dynamic range—the difference between the quietest and loudest parts of the music.
In V2.0+, we optimized the Power Protector to be smarter.
Check out the Green Waveform above:
- The Blue Side (Old): See how flat and blocky it looks? That’s compressed sound. It lacks energy.
- The Green Side (New): See those sharp spikes? Those are "transients"—the punchy snap of a drum or the kick of a bassline.
By relaxing the limiter and improving the transient power output, we allowed the music to "breathe."
The result?
The speaker hits harder. Because we aren't squashing the peaks anymore, you get a significant boost in perceived loudness and impact. It’s that extra punch you need to get the party started, without the sound feeling flat or breathless.
3. You Are the DJ (Redesigned Custom EQ)
Finally, we know some of you love to tweak things yourselves. We completely redesigned the Custom EQ module in the app. You now have more freedom to adjust the effective frequency range and gain. Whether you want to boost the vocals for a podcast or crank the bass for a workout, you have total control.
(Note: We kept the old XBass options in the app too, so you can compare the difference yourself!)
How to Unlock Your "New" Speaker
If you want that cleaner tone and punchier dynamics, you just need 2 minutes.
- Open the TRIBIT App.
- Connect your StormBox Lava.
- Look at the Firmware Version:
*If it says V1.5.5: Update it NOW! You are going to feel like you got a free upgrade.
*If it says V2.0.0: You can upgrade to the latest V2.0.3 to fix some minor bugs for an even smoother experience.
*If it says V2.0.3: Perfect! You’re already on the latest firmware. Enjoy your music!
